On Tuesday, U.S. News & World Report released its 2019 list of the best hotels around the world — and Hawaii’s Four Seasons Resort Hualalai took the No. 1 spot among U.S. hotels. The U.S. News rankings took into account each hotel’s industry awards, along with its star rating and guest reviews.
Here’s why the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai came out on top, according to the report: Not only is it surrounded by dramatic white-sand beaches and black-lava landscapes, it offers guests rooms and villas, some with private pools, world-class golf and even the chance to learn snorkeling from a marine biologist in their 1.8 million gallon, lava-rock aquarium stocked with more than 4,000 fish.
Hannah Cheney, the senior travel editor for U.S. News, adds that the hotel snagged a “vast collection” of this year’s industry awards — it was recognized on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold 2019 list for the first time — as well as high marks from guests. But you’ll pay big to stay here: Rooms often go for $1,000 a night, and some for upwards of $3,000 a night.
Rounding out the list of the top 5 hotels in America: The Peninsula Chicago (No. 2), the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, Surfside, Fla. (No. 3), Four Seasons Resort Lanai (No. 4) and the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago (No. 5). Cheney said guests cited Four Seasons hotels for their “customer service, luxurious amenities and elegant guest rooms.”

Plenty of these high-ranking hotels demand rates of $1,000 or more a night. But there are ways you can score a luxury hotel room for a lot less. First, look for rooms on luxury-travel discount sites like Jetsetter.com and SecretEscapes.com, both of which can sometimes get you discounts of 50% or more off regular rates. Hotel Tonight offers same-day deep discounts.
Devon Nagle, the head of communications at hotel booking site Priceline, advises bargain hunters to consider emerging rather than established destinations, midweek rather than weekend stays and bundling your flight with your hotel — Priceline consumers can save approximately $240 per transaction by doing this — and signing up for the hotel’s email list for discounts.
